xSample is open Android OS based app for conducting research with experience sampling methodology. Experience sampling (ESM) is a set of techniques which can tap human behaviour, thoughts, or feelings in real time.
xSample allows tracking of emotions and behaviours of the respondent. The app is designed to work in the background, so you can use your device without disturbance.
How xSample works?
- Items are displayed to the respondent and the responses are recorded in real time.
- Our app is flexible – the researcher sets questions, their order, and the number of days. In addition, the time interval can be set to be fixed or random.
- The app allows registration of the number of calls and text messages, but its content is not recorded in any way.
- The app is activated by installing it to the device (phone or tablet) and starting it.
- The researcher registers the email of the respondent in the database. Only respondents who are registered in the database can participate in the study.
- Respondents get notifications when it is time to answer the questions.
- In case the respondent does not respond when notified or exits the app before completing the questionnaire, the app can be easily started again by clicking on the xSample icon on the device.
Can participants withdraw from the study?
- YES! If for any reason, participant wants to withdraw, he/she can easily do it by uninstalling the app from the device. After uninstalling, data will not be recorded, and the participant will not receive notifications.
Are the data safe?
- All data recorded are stored to the central server and are completely safe. Data are used exclusively for research purposes, as part of the projects conducted in our Lab, Institute of Psychology, and Department of Psychology, University of Belgrade.
xSample is very user-friendly, and its use does not require programming skills.
