Individual differences in diverse socially relevant phenomena, as well as their relations with basic personality traits, are among the key interests of members and associates of Lira.

Lira researchers are studying individual differences in ideologically motivated violence. Within this topic, we have predominantly focused on militant extremism, foremost on the mental patterns of militant extremists (Međedović & Petrović, 2015, 2016; Saucier, Akers, Shen-Miller, Knežević & Stankov, 2009; Stankov, Higgins, Saucier & Knežević, 2010; Stankov, Saucier & Knežević, 2010), as well as the ethos of conflict – a system of beliefs that develops over the course of long-lasting intergroup conflicts (Međedović & Petrović, 2016) and the effects of these phenomena on political behavior (Međedović & Petrović, 2013).

Following the ideas of lexical approach, researchers of Lira are also working on the development and validation of comprehensive models of the structure of social attitudes (Petrović & Međedović, 2011; Petrović, 2016), as well as on studying cross-cultural differences in non-cognitive sources of individual differences, including lexical social attitudes (Stankov, Lee, & van de Vijver, 2014; Stankov, 2015; Stankov & Lee, 2016; Stankov, 2016). Our researchers are also taking part in research dealing with cross-cultural differences in national character stereotypes (Terraciano, …Knežević, …, & McCrae, 2005; McCrae, …Knežević, Purić, … & Terracciano, 2013).

One of our research lines attempts to shed more light on the unique contribution of Disintegration to the explanation of diverse ideological orientations, i.e. basic social attitudes. In the previous period, we have examined the relations of basic personality traits (including Disintegration) with right-wing authoritarianism (Keller & Knežević, 2016), as well as Disintegration and conservatism (Petrović & Međedović, 2016).

Members of Lira have also directed their efforts into validating the Moral Foundations Theory (Graham, Haidt, Koleva, Motyl, Iyer, Wojcik, & Ditto, 2013) and have, based on gathered empirical evidence (Međedović & Petrović, 2016), taken a critical stance toward certain aspects of this theory.

Members of Lira are investigating individual differences in attitudes toward specific social groups, such as migrants (Petrović, 2016; Vukčević, Momirović, & Purić, 2016; Vukčević, Dobrić, & Purić, 2014), Roma (Radoš, Zdraveva,& Žeželj, 2019; Žeželj, Jakšić, & Jošić, 2014),   LGBT persons (Bjekić, Živanović,&Žeželj, 2016; Lazarević, Orlić, & Knežević, 2015; Žeželj, Milošević-Đorđević, Niekerk, & Pavlović, 2019Živanović, Đokić, Lazarević, Orlić, & Bjekić, 2014), persons with invalidity (Petrović, Stojisavljević & Lukić, 2016; Jelisavac i Petrović, 2013; Veljković i Petrović, 2013) and persons with mental health difficulties (Pejović-Milovančević, Lečić-Toševski, Tenjović, & Popović-Deusić, 2009).

We are also investigating individual differences in so-called “epistemologically suspect” or irrational beliefs (Žeželj & Lazarević, 2019), such as beliefs in conspiracy theories (Lukić, Žeželj, & Stanković, 2019), superstitious beliefs (Žeželj, Pavlović, Vladisavljević, & Radivojević, 2009), as well as individual differences in different cognitive biases, such as personal or group-related memory bias (Zupan, Žeželj, & Anđelković, 2017; Psaltis, Franc, Smeekes, Ioannou, & Žeželj, 2017).

Our research of individual differences in socially relevant phenomena is being conducted within both national and international research projects.
